I’ve been thinking a lot about ‘mindfulness’ lately (note the irony) and am coming to realise the power in actually putting it into practice.
Paying attention to the present moment invites a joy that is often hindered by dwelling too much on the past or being much too concerned by the future.
Lately I have become more aware of how I’ve been perpetuating my own anxieties by living in the chaos of intense retrospective and prospective thinking, rather than living in the now and focusing full energies on that which I am currently actively engaged in – whether it’s a job, hobby, practice or person.
We often stop ourselves from playing out our ‘now’ by justifying time spent on circumventing future failures or worse, excusing our faults by past misfortunes.
It’s time we take responsibility for how we think and behave, and being present enables us to face our truths – the ones that matter right in this very moment.
Now summons a courage to live without being crippled by the things that have happened to us, nor fearing things that might possibly happen to us.
Learning to embrace the present moves us swiftly towards contentment; it provides a clear passage through guilt and fear because our mind becomes occupied with experiencing life just as it is, now.
Life is like audio sound waves in a piece of music, with all of its ups and downs, but only to be heard and enjoyed when we allow it to play.
Sound waves in my mind with noise I can’t control
Fearful to be missing parts that make me whole
Heart racing for tomorrow, the worry that it brings
Stealing me away from the now that I am in
Now is really all that matters
Now is gifted by today
Now is why I should be singing
Let music play
Let music play
World broken in pieces, war longing for peace
Souls in need of rescue, hope to be believed
In the clouded misty air I find a space to breathe
Open eyes I realise, the truth we need to see
Now is really all that matters
Now is gifted by today
Now is why we should be singing
Let music play
Let music play
Nothing is for certain but only change itself
Time to keep us going, faith to keep us well
And fear a foe when we look back,
Or look too far ahead
We live the music playing now
Not at our sound waves’ end
For now is really all that matters
Now is gifted by today
Now is why we should be singing
Let music play
Let music play
